How Carbon Monoxide Impacts Indoor Air Quality

Carbon Monoxide Impacts Indoor Air Quality

Carbon Monoxide impacts indoor air quality because it can be extremely dangerous when it enters your home. CO is a colorless, odorless gas that is the byproduct of fuel combustion. When it enters your airflow, the molecules of CO replace the oxygen (02) molecules. This can ultimately kill you, and leave you with what professionals call carbon monoxide poisoning.

What Causes Carbon Monoxide Poisoning?

There are many ways to be exposed to carbon monoxide, but in a typical home setting, you can be exposed to carbon monoxide through big appliances such as your furnaces, boilers, and more.

The EPA (The United States Environmental Protection Agency) explains that sources of CO include:

  • unvented kerosene and gas space heaters
  • leaking chimneys and furnaces
  • back-drafting from furnaces, gas water heaters, wood stoves, and fireplaces
  • gas stoves

Over time, in-home appliances get worn down or do not operate properly. Without proper care, this can cause real problems and impact the air quality of your home.

What Can You Do About It?

Having carbon monoxide in your home can impact the indoor air quality and the overall health of your family. That is why it is crucial to have your larger in-home appliances maintenanced on a regular basis.

When you maintenance your home appliances, you are taking the necessary precautions to keep your family safe and the air you breathe clean. Regular furnace, heater, boiler, and gas stove maintenance allow for HVAC professionals to put a stop and fix the issues that cause carbon monoxide before it is too late.
